Martin: Also agree with CLANNAD. It's pretty entertaining stuff at the moment, and hopefully KyoAni can take to a good place there. I think without SHAFT's influence though, it would be really hard for me to keep watching ef is scenes like what happened in the first minutes of episode 6 were are rare as they are. Not enough connection for me at the moment.

j. valdez: It's more about the journey to the end for me. A good end won't completely save sucky middle portions. :3

nomadotto: I think you could say that each of the characters are stuck in their own way: Kyousuke and Hiro each trying to find their relative inspirations, Renji's attempting to live up to what he wants to be I believe, and we still don't know too much about Miyako yet to see where she's stuck (though I think episode 7 helps out with that a lot).

As I've mentioned before, I've been very pleased with ef. There's one thing that I've been noticing that I'm not sure how to articulate, but it's about the connection between the two stories. They're both about people who are stuck, bu they're stuck in different ways, Kei is constantly moving but not going forward, which is quite a bit different from Chihiro, who had stopped trying to move at all. Anyway, I really with Martin about the art-house feel.

-Happy Turkey Day all!

This whole joint blogging thing is what incited my recent marathon of the series up to the most recent sub. I enjoy the alternative visuals and feel that they aid the story.

> I like the developing relationships and romances that are being set up in the show, though I worry about how well they’ll interconnect with each other as the show progresses.

I'm kind of worried that they will screw up the ending. I don't have any particular preference with regard to how the show ends. It's really about closure.

I guess I share TheBigN's views on bishoujo visual novel adaptations - they all appear to be of a muchness unless there's something that's done differently and/or unless it decides to cover new ground. Clannad is a good example of this - some people have (understandably) been surprised at how I enjoyed it (I'm pleasantly surprised too!) but it tackles themes in addition to merely adapting the game's story for a TV format.

ef seems to go about this in a completely different way - if feels so little like a computer game now that, even without having played it, I'm prepared to say it bears little similarity in terms of storyline at all. It's taking the characters and, if rumours are to be believed, the art style, and uses them to tell its own story and convey its own ideas. It now comes across as an arthouse piece concerning the subjective nature of memory and so much else besides...one heck of a lot more than a simple story of 'boy meets girl'. It's an unusual show but a very special one Ithink. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

SHAFT has a green light with me too, so I understand. It's interesting when others don't. :P

It's a large part of what keeps me watching the series, and I hope the series doesn't go into the sort of things that make me not watch these types of shows.

I also appreciate this show a lot because of Shaft's work. I typically hate bishoujo shows like this (see: sola), but I absolutely love ef. The directing is engaging, and the artistic symbolism makes my instincts flare. It could be said that the story is predictable, but the direction it is going in is amazing. Ah, but don't I say this kind of thing about any Shaft show~? ;P
