Susie Q: The show got much better after the director changed.

nomadotto: 2ch/ Gurren Lagan dustup? Tell me more!

Anyway, one of the things that draws me back that you didn't mention is that throughout the whole show you can really see why people choose the actions that they choose. Like Chris Rock said, "I ain't saying (they) should have done it, but I UNDERSTAND."

Hahaha ah okay :). I've only seen the first 2 episodes of Lucky Star, so far I'm kind of intrigued in a "are you serious...?" kind of way. Maybe that will get boring after a few more episodes...but the intro was crazy, and then they were talking about pastries forever (but it was really cute...) well I guess it'll take a few more episodes before I can figure out if I'm just watching because it's strange and different, or it's also a good show...but as long as it's entertaining all's good!

And thanks for the fandom background! I love hearing the gossip :).

Susie-

The answer can basically be summarized as "chocolate coronet."

The slightly longer answer is:
After Kyoto Animation's breakout success with Haruhi, there were really high expectations for their next project. Furthermore, the dominance of Haruhi over the anime-mindspace was so strong that there was an element of overreach, and a lot of folks were looking for something to beat the Haru-tards (as the term was) over the head with.

Enter Lucky Star. Episode one features eight minutes (more than 1/3 of the airtime of the episode) of intense non-action of high school girls discussing how they eat pastry. The rest of the series was fairly similar. Also at around this time (if memory serves) was the 2ch/ Gurren Lagan dustup (a story for another day), which had a good percentage of fandom riled.

Now, there are people who are crazy about this shaz (BigN, for instance). There are shows that are very similar to this that no-one blows a freakin' gasket over, for example, YKK. However, when there's a lot of expectation, a lot of people hoping to watch something crash and burn, the "hive" was just hit by a brick from a seemingly "trusted" angle, and you're given something like YKK, well, it becomes hilarious.

About half the "community" was absolutely in love with the damn series, some of which was genuine, some of which was an attempt to defend Kyoani, rather than genuine love for the show. Another big chunk of folks proceeded to use Lucky Star's boring non-action, and somewhat creepy following of high school girls, as a nailbat with which to beat the first group. Drama Ensues, and I laugh, all thanks to a chocolate coronet.

An interesting post analyzing Geass - a much better job than many have done to describe its draws, which are pretty hard to put in words.

>>(my two cents: treason in defense of slavery is not excusable)

Not really a fair representation of his position, but fair enough I suppose.

Great post. I think you may have picked up on some of the things I love about the show; as I'm far too much of a Geass fanboy to examine my reaction rationally, it's hard for me to tell why I like it myself.

@ Pete: The Geass is a ready-made doujin set-up.
