So, following Stripey’s lead, I’ll list my top 5 favorite anime at this moment:
- Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight
- Haibane Renmei
- Kino’s Journey
- Aria The Origination
- Hidamari Sketch
I find it’s more fun to find out what others think compared to my own opinion in cases like these (un”my”ased opinion and all that), so if you care, what do you think this list says about me? What do you think this list doesn’t say about me that would still be true, if this question makes sense?

Wow, I didn’t realize that so many of us few Manabi Straight faans all pretty much consider it our favorite show~
Your list says very obvious things about you. You like cute girls, mid-tempo pace, and general fuzziness.
Wait, no YKK?
Like people have said before, a list is just a list, and while someone else could find similarities by looking at the objective qualities of those titles, some things are always going to be personal to you, like when or how you watched them, what they mean to you or remind you of, etc.
So looking at your list, they’re all sentimental and episodic, have light comedy, feature casts of friendly females, and have slow, laid-back atmospheres. Now, I could extrapolate that and say you must be a laid-back, sentimental guy who likes friendly gals, but that could easily not be the case.
It’s interesting because we share two shows in our top 5s, so it’s only fair I turn this around and ask you: What do you think my favorites list says about me?
1. Crest/Banner of the Stars
2. Kare Kano
3. Haibane Renmei
4. Kino’s Journey
5. Castle in the Sky
6. Macross: DYRL
7. Cowboy Bebop
8. Azumanga Daioh
9. Rurouni Kenshin Prequel OVA
10. Gurren Lagann
I recently just started watching Aria….and by just started watching, I meant I watched most of the first episode, and then my computer shut off randomly, because it’s a piece of shit, and I still have to finish that episode, despite it being weeks later.
I’m embarrassed about my own top 3(you know what they are…)
so many people like Manabi Straight but nobody talks about it
I’ll be sure to get on that before long.
digitalboy: If it was top manga? Hell yeah, that would be #1 for sure. But anime and manga aren’t the same thing.
kadian1364: That’s part of the reason why I don’t analyze myself here and say “this list clearly states”, since I don’t think it’s as explanatory about who I am. And on terms of your list, I think you are someone who likes things that make you feel “something” strongly, and your enjoyment ties into that experience. But that’s also what part of this exercise is about, as I’m not sure how much that’s true or not. I think you got a little part of me down though.
glothelegend: Knowing you (ha), I’m not necessarily sure that ARIA’s your cup of tea, but I think that again you need more than one episode to be for certain that the show isn’t for you. But that’s just me.
Shin: And you should be, but not for the same reasons. I say so if only because I think you’re a little too open about your desires to the point where society would worry about you. :3
omo: dude. But yeah, it’s been a while since I’ve written about the show. I should do that again. When I have time.
Funny that Manabi Straight is coming up a lot — a couple of weeks ago I decided to bite the bullet and get the R2 DVDs (they’re in the air right now, about to land at Kennedy Airport!). Probably inspired by digitalboy’s talking about the characters in his top-100 characters list.
My top five list….
1) Nadesico
2) Serial Experiments Lain
3) Mushishi
4) Starship girl Yamamoto Yohko
5) Maybe I should put Manabi Straight here?
Now for the top five recommend-to-people who are curious about anime list:
1) Mushishi — by far. For the impatient, I recommend the first disk followed by episode 20 (the Tanyuu episode).
2) Cowboy Bebop — for the Japanese look at American cool from the middle of the last century.
3) Porco Rosso — for Humphrey Bogart as a pig with wings.
4) Totoro — especially if they have kids
5) Last Exile — really just the first few episodes. Sky Pirates, ahoy!
Though really I don’t have a top five — by the time I get to number four, I know enough about the person’s taste to give a tailored recommendation.
The first rule of Manabi Straight is you do not talk about Manabi Straight.
wth? The day I decide to leave some comments, you seem to always comment before or after me! WHAT GIVES?!?! >=O
Oh!? Hidamari at the bottom of the 5-Barrel? I thought you were more SUGOI-ed about that one. Either way, all those are respected shows, so I conclude that you are a respected man! :3
My top 5 would go like this:
1. Whisper of the Heart
2. Aria the Animation
3. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
4. Sketchbook ~full color’S~
5. Welcome to the NHK
I’ll probably take off Haruhi though… I… I don’t feel good supporting her anymore *destroys Haruhi-hat*! I find it interesting that I don’t have more comedy titles in there, since I tend to pun a lot… I’m Mr Mc Pun-A-Lot from Camelot, cause I Cum-A-Lot in the back-lot of the PACKING. I go MEOW and dogs go BARKING but I do have some WOOD I use a knife and do some CARVING *CRICKEEEEETTT* Okay, I’m done here :3
TAKE ME I’M YOURS!!! *drops his fat-ass all over TheBigN*
Wow… TBN.. >_< the anime series I cannot relate at all.. I wrote an entry on Yoroshiku/Shitstorm, but that will be slightly delayed.. but yep…. with the exception of Aria,, I only watched a bit of Haibane Renmei… ahh well. ^_^ anime fans are pretty different ne?
Hmm… I’m noticing a pattern here… Mostly slice of life, and then topped with a healthy dose of moe. XD
I guess you could say that I have several “top 5″ lists, though none of them really coincide with each other too much. If you look at what I collect (in terms of figures), then you’d probably miss on some of my favorite series.
My top 5 series to collect figures from:
1. Fate/Stay Night
2. Gurren Lagann (mostly because of one chracter, I’ll let you guess which one)
3. Suzumiya Haruhi no Yutsuu
4. ARIA
5. Aa! Megami-sama
Now, my favorite series of all time is a slightly different list…
1. Aa! Megami-sama
2. Shakugan no Shana
3. ARIA
4. Tenchi Muyo!
5. Noir
Wow, I’m a real sucker for some of the more classics, aren’t I…? ^.^;;
dm00: Rock on. I find that I need a little work on what I decide to recommend to others, but there’s always more experience to be had.
Kabitzin: But given Manabi’s goals, this rule totally is opposite in that sense.
Jesus159159159: It’s hard man.
miz: I think that’s an important point. And that’s why suggestions can be fun.
Asian Ed: The funny thing is, moe isn’t something that I directly pay attention to when watching the show, so it’s a sidenote more than anything else. But just remember that it was you who turned me onto shows with Slice of Life elements, you know.
Yes, but I claim no responsibility for the Moe factor.
Besides, I only introduced you to one (maybe two) of those: Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou and ARIA. You must claim responsibility for the other factors that crept into your favorites. Perhaps some unconscious decision?
A lot of shows with slice of life elements tend to have character that apparently fit “moe”, so it could be a “victim of circumstance” thing. At the same time, I don’t think of ARIA, Kino’s Journey, or Haibane Renmei as having “moe” elements in the slightest, but I guess that’s neither here nor there.
I don’t have a top 5, but rather a top 5 of their respective genres. (SOL, Action, Comedy, etc) It plays out differently according to my current mood, but usually I’m in the mood for slice-of-life.
