Tatami Galaxy episode six: Formula changed

by dm00

Poor, poor Johnny.

A victim of mind/body dualism.

Move over, Mind Game. This is why I like animation.

Even though I’ve grown tired of anime that references other anime, Gendou as cerebrum gets a chuckle, and having Noiseman sit at the conference table beside him makes my heart sing.

Life in the Tatami Galaxy

Imagine a long tracking shot down this hallway (photo from CNNgo)

A college dorm built in 1913, unmaintained for years, because the university wants to tear it down (a similar move in Tokyo in 2001 required over 500 security guards and staff to drag reluctant residents from that dorm).

Maybe thirty years ago it was in good enough shape to be Greenwood.

Check the CNN article’s comments for a note from a past resident of the dorm.

‘Music Reflecting Yui’, or ‘Something Vaguely K-On!-related…’

By TheBigN

If anything, this might give you a look into how bizarre my mind can be sometimes.

It took one very well-done Hidamari Sketch MAD (please watch on 480p for best effect) video to bring my attention to the sub-genre of music that apparently is Shibuya-kei two-years ago-ish through the magic that is capsule.  Besides that band, which I don’t feel like I know that well at all , I haven’t been listening to many other artists that “fit” into the amalgamation of electropop, jazz, bossa nova, and other influences that help make up Shibuya-kei (and if you wanted to know more about the music style as well as some of the artists that make it up, someone like wah or marxy would be a much better person to talk to). But thanks to capsule, I’ve been more likely to try to But thanks to capsule I got introduced to Hazel Nuts Chocolate, a move which I’m still trying to figure out if it was a good thing or not.

Hideyoshi Kinoshita and Another “Level” of Trap?

By TheBigN

Granted, this would probably work much better if this post came out while Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu was still on, but I think it still works regardless. :P

I don’t necessarily think it’s a secret, but I’m not sure if I’ve expressed my interest in “traps”, or wholesome convincing male crossdressers (yeah. :/), here a lot.  You know, how they change “rules and expectations” of what gender is supposed to be. How they help provide examples of the fluidity of attraction and the rationalizations that some people bring up when they want to stay within what’s considered normal. The confusion that they can inflict in others (see: Prunus Girl) as well as sometimes in themselves (see: Hourou Musuko, and if only Minami-ke was a more serious work. Yes, I went there because the possibilities of Mako-chan seem endless. On that note, I’m very tempted to try to get Idolmaster Dearly Stars because of Ryou Akizuki’s situation and how he deals with it). And so on.

One thing that tends to stick in my mind regarding these characters are the comfort levels that they are shown to have regarding their respective situations and status. Disregarding, you know, reality, and all of that, the main struggles if you can call them that seem to be internal rather than external in terms of the acceptance of a trap (some exceptions to this rule are really awesome, like Hourou Musuko). And by that, I mean how comfortable they are with themselves rather than how others see them (how often do we see someone really not take a convincing crossdresser in stride in purposes that aren’t comedic, for example?).  We have plenty of examples about males who are embarrassed about their situation of being put up0n for a variety of reasons (like Combutler Hayate or Ryou), and we have many examples of males who are comfortable with their identity as gender obsfucators, and use it to their advantage (like Aikawa from Prunus Girl or Jun from Happiness!!). But  I haven’t seen a lot of traps take things in stride like Hideyoshi Kinoshita does, and it leads to a different kind of comfort to me, and another interesting look at how to look at these characters as a whole.

And so it begins.

And so it begins. If you can find the source, please let me know.

A Belated Welcome

To those of you who are here from The Aniblog Tourney visiting this blog for the first time, those of you who are constant return visitors despite the relative “lack” of “posts” on the blog from me  (medical school is a hell of a time sink, you know) and my fellow awesome authors, those of you who are fans of GAR GAR Stegosaurus (epic name of a blog, fun times to be had there as well) and want to check out the competition for this round, and so on, I graciously welcome you to Drastic My Anime Blog. There’s not necessarily a set purpose to this blog since it started in February 2007, and it ends up being a bunch of ramblings about anime from myself, TheBigN, and two others, dm00 and nomadotto, along with any other people interested in writing guest posts or writing for the blog in the future.  People say we write editorials in general, so let’s go with that in terms of what type of blog this is. Either way, these ramblings can be serious business or seriously random, and they can even just be about anime in a more tangential sense than the medium itself, but they’re definitely sincere, and I hope they’re entertaining or interesting to you.

As this is the first round (and possibly last) for DMAB in this tournament, I’m not sure what needs to be done to win this matchup and possibly face off against either Mistakes of Youth or AstroNerdBoy, so any suggestions to go for the win (since we’re in it, let’s do it!) are cool save for slander, which I don’t like and suck at (mutually ex clusive reasons) or sucking up to the Tourney organizers that be could be good.  Of course, writing more is always an option (thank you omo :v), and barring other obligations, lack of time, and access to internet among other things, there should be more writing here in the near future. But as for what is already here, if you’re interested in learning more about the authors or the blog itself, the respective links are here and here. There’s the tag cloud and list of categories on the right side of the page if something catches your fancy, and more specific examples follow.  If you’re looking for thoughts in some of the current titles of today, or of yesteryear, the musings category might be where it’s at. There’s some occasional posts on music and manga, posts that list our “gripes”, and posts where I think more about how we as anime fans go with our passions, and what comes with it. And of course, there is always random stuff, random looks back to time long past, random self-patting on the back posts, and random pictures… mostly of Shikieiki.

One more thing. As someone who has helped try to run something like the Aniblog Tourney before, one of the things I like about efforts like these is getting people to learn more about blogs that they otherwise would not pay attention to beforehand, and I hope that this round is the same for others. And one thing that I also want is for people, regardless of whether you’ve been here before or not, to list any comments, critiques, criticisms, commendations, or any other forms of communication that they want to about this blog. It would be cool if we could use this week-long spotlight, if this is all we get, to see where we are in the eyes of others, as well as to see where the blog can go from here.

That being said, please vote for us from the kindness of your heart. :P

2Dteleidoscope on Tatami Galaxy:

I think that we’re seeing a Schroedinger love story, a romp through the multiverse tied together with the red string of fate.

If there is a Blogger-prose Hall of Fame, this sentence belongs in it. As Omo points out in the comments, the whole post is like a shaggy-dog story winding up synchronously with a nice pun and a nice look at Tatami Galaxy.

Clannad considered harmful

by dm00

Vaseline lens flare

or, “How I learned to appreciate Angel Beats“.

I finished Clannad After Story last night, plunging through the six episodes on the last disk in one sitting (which I suspect is an easier, though perhaps not better, way to see it than in a series of week-long cliffhangers).

Oh, hey, sad girl buried in snow.
