Photoslop and bad puns

There's not Yotsuba! anime, but you could vote for Yotsuboryzae.

There's no Yotsuba! anime, but you could vote for Yotsuboryzae in last year's AGP.

Omo has already blogged about this, and Schneider has given a personal view of the first round.

It’s a lot of fun, with people finding ways to promote their favorite characters and anime — sometimes with text, sometimes with images, sometimes with faked newspapers, and sometimes with the surreal.

Once, with a series of recipes.

Last year, the AGP was taken a bit by surprise when a mob of cosplaying microbes suddenly appeared.

You couldn't vote for Akari (she'd lost in an earlier round), but you could vote for Akoryzae.

You couldn't vote for Akari (she'd lost in an earlier round), but you could vote for Akoryzae.

The whole thing was inspired by the already-almost-oryzae Aria super-deformed style.

You couldn't vote for Aeru, but you could vote for Oryzaeru.

That year saw a big push for Youko from 12 Kingdoms, so the proryzae faction yielded to the temptation to do a little pandering.

Also appearing were Oryzaka…

A Kanon moe-blob detourned as an oyblob….

Who would think that Nayuki could be the stuff of nightmares?

Who would think that Nayuki could be the stuff of nightmares?

As with Akari, the leap from Nayuki to Nayeasti was both small and disturbing.

And when others joined in the fun, we soon had images of Aspergillus Langley Shoyu, Madoka from Kimagure Oryzae Road, the Laughing Oryzae (“I thought what I would do was vote for Asperigillus Oryzae in the AGP”), and an impressionist interpretation of Kamina and Simon (“Believe in me that believes in brew.”).

Also this, which I posted a while back when I came across it in my files:

ginkoryzae

Very silly, but something of a metaphor for the charm of Moyashimon and its charismatic microbial stars. People found themselves stunned to be supporting fungi and yeast in an anime character popularity contest.

They lost, alas, but narrowly.

That was last year. Who knows what this year will bring.

“Believe in me that believes in brew”

I was actually surprised to find that I was the one who made that up while going through the old threads. I haven’t really played around enough in this year’s AGP, but I mean to do so once Round 2 begins.

beefy: I remembered that you’d come up with that one. (lastarial did Madoka and Aspergillus Langley Soyu, as I recall); and Jeff Lawson the wonderful Laughing Oryzae that I was too lame to get turned into tee-shirts.

I’ve got a few ideas on the burner for the next round, but don’t know how much time I’ll have to work on them or campaign.
