Also, I think we learn this episode who the other girl is in the Madoka transformation sequence in the opening animation. Perhaps we should have paid more attention to hair-length and less to hair-color.

Good lord, what an episode.
Indeed. In many respects there were few surprises, but the execution was superb (not just the art, but the way Homura’s character developed over the course of a mere 24 minutes).
